10 pm the night before I was due to fly to Zanzibar for a 3-month work project. Faffing and fretting as was customary before I travelled I went to check-in online. To my utter horror, I saw that the flight was leaving at 10:30 pm TONIGHT, not tomorrow night. With an ominous, sinking feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach, I reached for my mobile and called my boss, James. Fortunately, we had become close friends after several years working together;
‘James, you’re going to kill me…..please don’t be angry. I had a total blonde moment and thought that the flight was leaving TOMORROW night.’
To my great surprise and relief, he calmly replied;
‘Don’t worry darling. You’ve been under a lot of pressure over the last week getting up to speed with the project.’
48 hours later I had finally arrived in Zanzibar’s capital Stone Town. My new german colleague Francesca was a little thrown as she had hoped to have at least 24 hours to prepare for our first VIP meeting with The Minister of Finance. She and I had never actually met in the flesh before, only on Skype.
The first text flashing up on my screen when I landed was from Francesca.
‘Sorry, I can’t pick you up I’m on the other side of the island having lunch with Lucian, the owner of the hotel we’re staying at. We’ll be back soon after you arrive at the hotel.’
Mildly offended and slightly curious about this mysterious Lucian character, I hailed a taxi. We weaved our way through the topsy-turvy island roads, flashes of azure perfection gleaming brightly. 15 minutes later the car drew up to what was to be my home for the next 3 months, the aptly named Utopia Hotel. Nestled beautifully into the Indian Ocean coastline, the boutique hotel had the feeling of a private home in The Hamptons; white painted decking, plantation-style shutters, faded glamour.
