Saturday Night at Chiltern Firehouse, seeking warmth, adventure and respite from the merciless bleakness of February. The hot South African had sent me a tantalising photo of him chilling at home in a hoodie;
“I’m not moving far tonight babe….another time.”
He was a tease that one. Hungry to salvage the night I scanned the room. A vertiginously tall cute Verve lookalike caught my eye on the other side of the dance floor. He seemed to sway dreamily above the crowd, shining sweetly like a spindly angel, strangely incongruous with his dastardly handsome friends; the dissolute duo.
“How’s your night going?” asked the tall handsome stranger.
“My friends are wasted and want to go to another club….but I’d love it if we could swap numbers?”
An hour later Ben texted; “God my friends are doing my head in. Will you be at Chiltern for a while? I’m thinking of heading back.”
“Sure, I’m still here!”
It was nearly last orders by the time he arrived. I was happy to see him. He seemed sweet, gentle, handsome, sincere. We rolled out with a group of friends who were headed to an after-party in Marylebone.
“Right this is the plan,” said my housemate Alice excitedly.
“You’re going home to ours with Ben, and I’m going back to Matt’s place.”
“Do you like dogs?” Alice asked Ben.
“Yes, I love dogs!” he replied with wide-eyed glee.
“Great, you two can go for a walk by the river in the morning with the dog”!
Alice had kindly co-ordinated my night with almost military precision without asking me if I actually WANTED to go home with Ben, the gentle, dreamy antique restorer from Herne Hill. I went along with it anyway, partially to humour Alice and partially to indulge my curiosity. What’s the worst that could happen, I thought to myself.
