Lucian and Francesca rolled into the hotel lobby, a conspiratorial bundle of jovial post-lunch camaraderie. It felt a little strange to be meeting Francesca for the first time in this cosy, brandy laced scene with Lucian. Was I jealous or disapproving? I could ‘t tell. Off to an awkward start already, thanks to my missed flight, this wasn’t exactly helping.
‘I was so worried about you at Dar Es Salaam airport.’ Francesca harped on.
As we were travelling from different countries, we had scheduled our flights so that we would arrive at the same time and travel by boat to Zanzibar together. Somehow Francesca hadn’t received my message in time and spiralled into a panic that I had been abducted by aliens.
I could feel Lucian’s eyes steadily appraising me as I tried to bond with Francesca.
‘Welcome to Zanzibar’, he purred with his heavy French accent.
‘Francesca has told me all about your project. I remain at your disposal if I can be of assistance in any way.’
Ten years of living and working in Zanzibar had afforded Lucian an invaluable insight into the inner workings of the island. Originally from Luxembourg, Lucian had a louche air of mystique about him which instantly attracted me. Not traditionally handsome, the combination of a sexy mind and mature gravitas intrigued me.
Straight in at the deep end, our first meeting the following day was with The President. Leaving the hotel in the morning, a local guy asked if he could grab a lift with us into town. We had been warned that the traffic in Stonetown could be arduous so we left ourselves with a window of 1 hour to arrive in a timely fashion. Hitting heavy traffic as we approached the residence of the president we were fast running out of time. The only way we could make the meeting was to leave the car with our newfound friend and make a run for it.
